VISITING SOGLIANO AL RUBICONE
Sogliano al Rubicone stands in a vast area between Savio river and Rubicone river;
this hilly area offers wide views from Apennine Mountains to Adriatic sea. A poetic
path dedicated to the poet Giovanni Pascoli goes through Sogliano al Rubicone (see
map). G. Pascoli had a close bond of affection with the “small, beloved village
in Romagna”, and he received the freedom of Sogliano in 1906. Walking along the
paths of Parco Pascoliano means following a double route: you have the chance of
visiting the places which were part of the poet’s life and were source of inspiration,
and you can immerse in his poetics by reading the poems you find at every stop.
Don’t miss the opportunity to know better the territory and its tradition, to enjoy
the deep connection among nature, poetry and history, typical of our village. Following
the route you arrive in the centre. In Piazza Garibaldi there is Palazzo della Cultura

which hosts three interesting permanent exhibitions: the Veggiani Collection, the
Arte Povera Collection and the Museum of Linea Christa. In Via Pascoli stands the
Carmelite Convent (formerly Augustinian), founded by Paolo Mariani in 1824,
next to the ancient Oratorio della Pietà (1518) today Church of Madonna dello Spasimo
that is open for visits. Not far, in Piazza della Repubblica, there is Palazzo Comunale,
present Town hall. Inside an ancient marble coat of arms representing the Lion of
Saint Mark whose realization was ordered by Ramberto Malatesta at the beginning
of XVI century. In Piazza Mazzini stands “E.Turroni” Theatre (picture on the left)
opened in 1997 after being completely restored. Near the theatre one can admire
the Church of Suffrage, built in 1679; the Bell Tower dates back to 1867.
Inside the church some paintings of remarkable value, in particular an oil painting
dated XVIII century, representing the Holy Family. In Piazza Matteotti one can see
the façade of the Ex-fascist building (on the right), with its peculiar architectural
style; It was designed and built in 1941 by the Bolognaise architect Luigi Giordani
by the good offices of Mussolini.

In front of the building the Butterflies Fountain, nowadays a symbol of Sogliano:
it was conceived by the artist Tonino Guerra and unveiled in 2003. The whole municipal
territory is interesting to discover, from the historic point of view and for its
naturalistic attractions. It is possible to complete the visit on foot, through
the “Butterflies Paths”, trekking and mountain-bike routes opened in 2005.

PALAZZO DELLA CULTURA
Inside three interesting permanent exhibitions:

Veggiani Collection
Antonio Veggiani, mining engineer, was a connoisseur in studies specialized
in discovering his territory. The municipality boasts the honour of owning his entire
heritage. The collection has two sections – one of documentation and one of mineralogical
finds – located in six rooms adorned with beautiful frescoes. The collection
consists of five thousand volumes on general knowledge, manuscripts, scientific
essays, photo material and slides. There are also various mineralogical and fossil
finds among which a precious ovoid amber that weighs 625 gr. and was found
by Veggiani near Campaolo, hamlet of Sogliano al Rubicone. It is possible to visit
the collection and to consult the texts, every Saturday morning from 9.00 to 12.30.
To visit the collection on other days please call the number 0541- 817311 to book,
at least three days before.

Arte Povera Collection
Besides the history written by historians in heavy volumes rich in dates, numbers
and quotations there is history written on pieces of paper, cards and small holy
pictures; this “poor paper” has not got the abundance of a book or the “dignity”
of a newspaper, but commits its coloured messages to one or two pages. The “poor
paper” exposed in this museum refers to a period of time relatively brief
in the history of illustration, about one hundred years. During the second half
of XVIII century a new technique, chromolitograph, caused a breakthrough making
possible the mass printing of stained images at low costs. Marvelling, fascinating,
surprising without claiming to educate are some of the peculiar characteristics
of poor paper. Visits by appointment : n. 0541- 948418.

Museum of Linea Christa
The Linea Christa was composed by a series of strongholds and strategic points along
the Rubicone river; along this line the German soldiers stopped for a period of
time the advance of allied troops in October 1944, during the Second World War.
The museum exposes war material used by armies involved in battles in the
territory of Sogliano. A photographic section documents the visit of Benito
Mussolini in Sogliano, the arrival of the allies, the damages the war caused and
many other details. Inside a cave of the building hosting the collection, an air-raid
shelter has been realized in order to give a realistic idea of allies air raids.
The museum opens every Saturday morning from 9.00 to 12.30. To book a visit on another
day of the week or another time please call, three days before, the number 329-2097279.

FOSSA CHEESE
The Fossa Cheese is a symbol of Sogliano al Rubicone and it is well known and appreciated
all over Italy. This unique product is made from the fermentation, in tuffaceous
underground rooms, of cheese produced in the area of Rubicone and Marecchia valleys.
It is possible to visit the fosse by appointment. The custom of burying cheese was
characteristic in rural tradition since XV century. Four important phases
are necessary for the production: at first the fosse are prepared, next the cheese
is placed inside, and after a period of maturing of 90 days it is taken out. Maturing
in these particular conditions of humidity and temperature gives to the cheese a
strong taste, an intense fragrance and good nutritional features. The peculiarities
of Fossa Cheese are protected and guaranteed by the Producer’s Association “Il Fossa”.
In 2005 this ancient product obtained as award the “Premio Qualità Buonitalia”
for its quality, in the section “Traditional Agroindustrial Products” in which there
were more than 980 typical Italian Products. In these days the product is waiting
for the PDO ( Protected Designation of Origin ), so that it will take the name “Formaggio
di Fossa di Sogliano al Rubicone e Talamello”. Nowadays the annual production
is about 3000-3500 quintals ( 70 % “pecorino” cheese).

MONTETIFFI AND MONTEGELLI
Built in ashlar stone by the inhabitants of the area, the Benedictine Abbey
is an authentic jewel of Romanesque architecture. The interior hosts works of art
of great value: frescoes dated 1300 by the school of Rimini, paintings, vestments
and epigraphs. The Municipality bought the monk’s house and after restoration made
it a museum dedicated to the poet Venanzio Reali. This particular “artist of faith”
was born in Montetiffi in 1931 and died in Bologna in 1994. He was a biblist, painter,
poet and sculptor. The museum “Agostino Venanzio Reali - Art and Poetry”
boasts more than one hundred works (paintings, sketches, terracotta) most of them
with a religious theme. Open on Saturday from 15 to 18, Sunday from 14.30 to 18.30
and during the week on request (n. 0541-940612). Montetiffi stands on a rock
which degrades till the Torrent Uso and a path carved in the rock links the village
to the stream. Here the Uso offers rare natural marvels: age-old trees, protected
essences, little sources, a riverbed eroded by water in millions of years work,
little waterfalls and lakes and the so-called “marmitte dei giganti”. In this area
are the ruins of an ancient mill and the newly restored Ponte Romanico, with
a round arch structure; it was the link between Romagna and Montefeltro. Montetiffi
owes its renown also to the centuries-old production of typical baking pans, teglie,
used for piadina cooking. For this reason the village is very well-known all over
Romagna. Camilletti-Reali is a family who continues the art of making teglie, the
laboratory situated in Ville Montetiffi still presents traditional techniques and
materials.

In Montegelli the elegant Pieve di S. Stefano in Murolo, built in
Romanesque style, hosts interesting works of art. Visits by appointment (n. 0541
940047). Montegelli is renown as a village of fragrances and flavours: in spring
you are surrounded by fields full of flowers and officinal herbs, in autumn you
can taste the savor, saba and mastlaz, products prepared following traditional recipes.
The Savor is a sweet jam composed by must, apples, quinces, pears and dried
fruit. The Mastlaz is an early wine rich in sugar, and the Saba is
a very sweet and thick boiled must. The jams are also typical products, prepared
with elderberries, figs and tomatoes. In Montegelli the officinal herbs are
cultivated and sold to herbalist’s shops.
